M1-Abrams Texturing

I’m finally getting a chance to get this tank textured.  I’ve been running into so many things that I’ve never had to deal with before so its really slowed down my production time as I only have evenings to work on it.  I will say that because of every new obstacle I’ve learned so much!  I may not have produced 10 models at this point but I’ve really learned the ins and outs of creating normal maps along with other texturing techniques.  Here is an update with the diffuse texture for the most part in place.  Still trying to blend different grime layers together. I activated the Directx shader as well so this is what it would look like in a game!

M1-Abrams Sculpt

It took me awhile to get any headway on this since these past few months have been jammed packed with family stuff.  My oldest brother got his Masters!  Woo Hoo!  Now that things are starting to settle down again I got a chance to work on this again.  I finally wrapped up sculpting this tank at least as far as I’m going to take it.  I need to deliver this bad boy to the client.

I got a neat offer from an old co-worker to model him a tank for a old school style “Scorched Earth” game he’s making.  He’s creating an XNA tutorial book on how to make this game.  The trouble is he needs it sooner rather than later and gave me almost no lead time.  I decided to go with it and put Cyan on hold for a bit.  I figured this would be a neat change of pace from characters and a nice oppritunity to have something published.  So I collected my reference material and started building out a base mesh.  See below for the base mesh….  Stay tuned for the sculpt!

Cyan Update!

Here is an updated shot of Cyan, I’ve been running into roadblocks along the way that I’ve had to deal with but he’s finally baked with light/normal maps.

Back in the saddle

Man its been crazy these past few months. A lot has happened since I last posted. I graduated form college, got a new job(unfortunately not in 3D art!), and a pretty painful loss in the family. Now that those have passed and life is finally returning to a somewhat normal state, I can finally get back to some gosh darn modeling. I’ve got a number of unfinished projects that I really want to button up.  For starters, the closest one I have to being finished is Cyan. I rushed through his design because I was under the gun to get him finished for my Portfolio Review for graduation. Now that I look at him he doesn’t really match his concept at all which doesn’t reflect well on my abilities. Sure I think he looks good but I failed to accurately convert the concept to 3D. So now I have to go back to the modeling phase and redo his mesh, along with every other phase. 🙁 So I take it back, he really isn’t that close to being finished…

The good news is I have renewed vigor to get a job in game art. I took a new job which I thought might persuade me from pursuing game art. As the title suggests, in the end it only reinforced the idea and I’m back in the saddle! I hope to be updating regularly because my goal is to have at least 1 new model a month for the next year. I should be able to reach that goal fairly easily especially if I decide to mix it up and do some props.

Today starts a journey to my new career, one model at a time. Here goes nothin…

Models! Oh my!

I was finally able to rope my brother into helping me get my website compatible with all the browsers!  So I can finally publish the updated Models page!  I’m so happy with the way it turned out even though its not 100% finished its close enough to publish.  With a few more tweaks for polish it should really shine.  If you get a chance to check it out let me know what you think!

New Layout

Man its been awhile since my last post So it was time to reorganize this site to better serve as a portfolio.  I think I’ve achieved that thanks to my professor and with the help of my older brother.  I tried my best to dumb it down and simplify it and I think I’ve done just that.  I’m still trying to figure out a good layout for including videos as well as my main portfolio page will only display images.  I’m also curious if there is an easy way to organize a group of images into a “Project” to show my whole process.  At least these modifications are a step in the right direction.  The content uploaded in the portfolio page may or may not be final, it was there for testing purposes.  Stay tuned for more as I get it populated with real portfolio entries!

Cyber Assassin walkthrough video

Our team leader got around to putting this video together for us to put in our portfolios.  This is a real quick walkthrough of what we were able to accomplish in 12 weeks. Although he dies at the end that is the end of the level, and a simple screen would come up saying “Mission Accomplished.” Pardon the choppiness of the video but it gives you an idea of our presentation.

Chrono – Concept

I started mapping out a project for a little short animation awhile ago to help develop my skills as an animator and to experiment with different methods of modeling.  I decided to do things right by starting with concept art.  You may recognize him, this guy is a total stud.  Chrono Trigger, the game of games for the SNES, easily one of the most successful titles for the system, and still has a pretty strong following.  Many moons ago there was a “rebirth” project to bring the game into 3D with the same story just better graphics.  Well that got canned with a nice little Cease & Desist from what was Sqaresoft(now Square-Enix) at the time.  I had stumbled upon the site randomly and it motivated me to use both Chrono and Magus for my animation.  The project is to build both of the models, rig, and then animate a convincing fight scene.  I’ll eventually have to create environments as well but I’m taking it one step at a time.  I drew this awhile ago now but I’m planning to pick this project back up as time allows.

Xenia – Concept

A group of my classmates decided to join in some healthy competition.  We decided that we will design characters and then as a group decide who’s was the best.  We’ve been helping each other on and off over our winter breaks.  So I decided to try female villain character.  And this is what I came up with…

Now its time to convert her into 3D!
